University told to pay up
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been ordered by the Fair Work Ombudsman to repay more than $6 million to thousands of staff it underpaid for up to 10 years.
UOW has already back paid more than 5,000 current and former staff it has underpaid over the past decade.
“At a time of job cuts, revelations such as these reduce further our confidence in university management,” said General Secretary of the Community and Public Service Union (CPSU ) NSW, Stewart Little.
The university has recently announced plans to cut hundreds of jobs.
The Fair Work Ombudsman has also ordered the university to make a Commonwealth contrition payment of $130,000 and implement a range of mitigation measures to prevent further underpayments.
