Help beyond the workplace

The PSA CPSU NSW is working to prevent family and domestic violence.

Even when your shift at work finishes, your union is always here for you.

One of the first unions to embody family and domestic violence leave into an Enterprise Agreement 20 years ago, the PSA CPSU NSW is fighting to ensure the State Government takes this social scourge seriously.

At their very core, unions are vital in preventing family and domestic violence. Too often family and domestic violence is rooted in power and control, and economic dependence keeps many survivors trapped in abusive situations.

This is where unions such as ours step in: securing fair wages, benefits, and job protections, which give workers the financial stability needed to leave unsafe environments.

The family and domestic violence leave our union has won helps members through flexible scheduling and protection from discrimination or job loss related to abuse. These policies ensure survivors can attend court dates, seek medical or counselling services, or relocate safely without risking their livelihoods.

Recently our union has campaigned for the justice system to take family and domestic violence more seriously. We have successfully fought for tighter bail conditions and better use of the remand system for those accused of violence towards partners.

We have twice now prevented the closure of the Mount Druitt Family Violence Centre, the only one of its kind in the state run by the Department of Communities and Justice. Having saved the centre, we are now demanding it serve as a template for the State Government to open similar centres throughout NSW.

Public service matters. We are proud of our members who work at the centre (pictured), and all our members who do so much to combat family and domestic violence in our state. From staff in Police and Correctives working with offenders, through to Community Services and Homes NSW working with people escaping violent households, there are our members fighting to help those affected by family and domestic violence. We have members in schools, Legal Aid and Service NSW, just to name a few, taking this issue on.

These members go to work to help some of the most vulnerable people in our community. They literally save lives.

And these members can rely on the unwavering support of their union.
