Report raises spectre of abandoned regions in Australia.
The first National Climate Risk report paints a bleak picture for Australia’s future, warning about temperatures above 50 degrees and parts of the country uninhabitable.
“We know it is the PSA and CPSU NSW members who will be at the frontline of this existential battle for the state’s future,” said General Secretary Stewart Little. “This is not something we can leave to private companies.”
Mr Little said members in diverse portfolios, such as Planning and the Office of the Chief Scientist, will play a vital role in designing better cities to combat rising emissions and better prepare people for torrid temperatures.
“Our universities will play a vital role in research in the fight against climate change,” he said. “It is absurd these places are cutting staff numbers at a time when their work is so vital.
“Likewise, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are researching how farming can adapt to altered climatic conditions. Job cuts here make no sense.”
