Union reacts to alleged attack.
The PSA CPSU NSW has issued a statement in regards to the alleged attack on independent parliamentarian Helen Haines.
The MP for the federal seat of Indi is in hospital after being struck by a vehicle.
In statement to its members working for state politicians, the union expressed thoughts for Ms Haines and her staff.
“In an era of coarsening political debate, we extend our solidarity to all workers in electorate offices and parliamentary chambers nationwide,” said the union in a bulletin to members. “Regardless of political affiliation, these workers are vital for a thriving democratic process. They deserve respect when carrying out their duties.
“We urge all PSA members working in electoral offices and the NSW State Parliament to take precautions when at work. This is particularly important as NSW goes into an election campaign, when political tensions are on the increase.”
The PSA CPSU NSW said members working in electorate offices and State Parliament should contact their union if threatened at work.
