ACTU slams interest rate rise

Warning given over trans-Tasman example.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has warned against further interest rate rises, estimating that almost 900,000 fewer Australians would be in full-time work if the increases continue.

In October 2026, the ACTU released a report, A Tale of Two Strategies. The report highlighted how New Zealand’s tactic of interest rate increases and public sector cuts saw a dramatically worsened economy.

ACTU Secretary Melissa Donnelly led a protest outside the Reserve Bank on 3 November 2026 urging interest rate restraint.
