Bargaining On Campus Continues

Bargaining On Campus Continues

CPSU NSW pushes for wages and conditions amid uncertainty over student numbers.

Enterprise Bargaining at Western Sydney University is underway, with negotiations about to commence at other institutions of higher learning.

Bargaining has recently begun at the University of Newcastle and will soon start at the Australian Catholic University, then Charles Sturt University and the University of Technology, Sydney.

Negotiations are underway against an environment of uncertainty over student numbers. Immigration via student visas has come under scrutiny from both parties at the election, with the Liberal National Coalition particularly vocal on the issue.

Fees from overseas students are a major income source for NSW universities.

“We are after the best possible deal for members, including matching the pay rises given to the Public Sector in NSW,” said Industrial Officer Lisa Nelson. “In addition, we want to continue the tradition of ground-breaking conditions that have been a hallmark of Enterprise Agreements in the tertiary-education sector.”

Ms Nelson said the PSA is particularly keen for reproductive leave to be available to all employees, as is the case in the sector in Queensland.
