Union praises members in vocational education.
The CPSU NSW was part of two celebrations for the work done by members working in the state’s TAFE system.
In August Public Education Week was held to recognise CPSU NSW members and celebrate the work of public schools and TAFE colleges.
In addition, the union held a function in Wollongong for National TAFE Day in September, as well as other campuses.
CPSU NSW Organiser Michael George said the staff at TAFE NSW are “some of the hardest workers you’ll meet”.
Over the course of the week Mr George met with an array of groups, across different TAFE locations. This gave members the opportunity to interact one-on-one with their union.
“These staff members offer everyday support to students and strengthen public education, from roles including librarians, ground staff, administrative staff and disability support,” said Mr George. “Behind every successful classroom is a group of dedicated workers, they are the backbone of TAFE.
“It is essential we ensure that all staff are treated fairly and supported at their place of work. The CPSU NSW works with our TAFE council to promote their hard work and fight to make their voices heard.”
Some teams the CPSU NSW works with include employees from diverse cultural and migrant backgrounds, who often face cultural barriers in the workplace. With the support of the union, these staff members receive education on their contracts and their rights as an employee.
“We are on their side,” said Mr George.
General Secretary Stewart Little said events such as Public Education Week and TAFE Day gave members the knowledge and tools for them to feel secure and respected in their positions.
To conclude this year’s Public Education Week, CPSU NSW hosted a TAFE Delegates Council meeting to really highlight the significance of our members and their first-hand experiences in the workplace.
The council is comprised of a strong cohort of delegates who all share the same desire to support and empower members. This meeting gave an opportunity for the CPSU NSW to show our support for our members and provide them with the platform for our delegates to be heard.
