Podcasts Take On Housing Crisis

As the union representing many members involved in housing, it is inevitable that the PSA CPSU NSW dedicates a number of podcasts to the issue.

A recent episode interviewed the union’s Policy Analyst Anna Patty to discuss the PSA CPSU NSW’s recent housing survey.

“This episode shatters the myth that steady employment guarantees housing security,” said Assistant General Secretary and podcast host Troy Wright. “With an incredible response rate of over 5100 members, the survey provides a statistically powerful and genuinely representative slice of the public sector workforce across NSW.

The episode covers stories from members who replied to the survey, detailing extreme commutes, working people facing hidden homelessness, those sleeping upright in utilities, living in caravans, or couch-surfing while trying to maintain full-time jobs.

In the episode, Mr Wright and Ms Patty discuss structural failures driving this crisis. They examine the 33 per cent decline in public housing stock since the 1990s, the accountability issues within the community housing sector, and the fundamental flaw in “affordable housing” schemes that are tied to market rates rather than real incomes.

“By comparing Australia’s broken system to international models like Canada, this episode makes an urgent case for genuine government intervention and a complete overhaul of housing policy,” said Mr Wright.

Another episode talks to Nikki Corner and Sally Deans of Legal Aid. The duo talk about the work done by PSA members in Legal Aid, with housing taking up an increasing percentage of cases as more people come looking for help with matters relating to renting.

“The housing crisis is just one area where our members are making a real difference,” said Mr Wright. “These episodes show how important our members are in keeping a roof over people’s heads.

“Other episodes show the sheer variety of workplaces we cover, from Forensic Officers to the people protecting our fishing stocks.
“Listen wherever you download podcasts; you won’t be disappointed.”
