Retirees Urge Parties To Keep Hands Off Super

Members have seen the benefits of compulsory savings

The PSA CPSU NSW Retired Associates have urged politicians to keep their hands off superannuation.

In recent months, the superannuation system has attracted criticism from Liberal Party politicians such as Tim Wilson and Andrew Bragg, who want compulsory contributions scrapped. Both Mr Wilson and Senator Bragg are part of the generous superannuation provisions afforded to federal parliamentarians.

One Nation has also floated the idea that account holders should be able to access superannuation balances to purchase property. The move has been criticised by economists for being inflationary and increasing the country’s future pension bills.

“Many of us in the Retired Associates are now seeing the benefits of Australia’s world-class superannuation scheme,” said Dave McKeough, President of the group. “We are seeing people have fulfilling retirements with the savings the scheme has provided.

“We also know that the country will be facing a debt crisis if superannuation is not there for future retirees.”

The Retired Associates meet regularly at PSA House to discuss issues of importance to senior Australians, including the superannuation system.

In recent meetings, members discussed what happens to a person’s digital assets after they die. The group has also had appearances from organisations such as Service NSW, the Sydney Retired Unionists Group and the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association

“We urge all members who leave the workforce to take advantage of the reduced membership prices available to the Retired Associates,” said Mr McKeough “It is an excellent way to support campaigns such DV Needs Public Services, as well to keep in touch with former comrades.

“Meetings are held online or in person at PSA House.”
