Sydney man handed state’s first sentence under new definition of domestic violence.
The PSA CPSU NSW has welcomed the state’s first prison sentence for non-physical domestic abuse.
Callum Fairleigh, 34, became was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 months for coercive control over partner.
His behaviours included belittling, insulting and humiliating his partner, as well as isolating her from friends and family.
“The union movement is upping its campaign to address Australia’s spiralling domestic violence crisis,” said PSA CPSU NSW Women’s Industrial Officer Simone Scalmer. “Sentences such as these are welcome as they prove the justice system is taking the issue of coercive control seriously.”
