Officers refuse to aid shift of inmates to other centres.

Prison Officers who are PSA members refused to move inmates out of Goulburn Gaol as part of the closure of two wings.

“Goulburn Prison Officers Vocational Branch [POVB] subbranch has submitted a motion to not assist the Department in the decanting of the Goulburn Correctional Centre Main Gaol units two and three to any other centre including the processing of these inmates via the normal reception-room process,” said POVB Chair Darren King.

The State Government plans to close two maximum security wings at the facility. A total 170 inmates will be relocated and staff offered redeployment. Two other wings closed in 2024. This move is opposed by the PSA and local government and business bodies.

“PSA members will continue normal scheduled court and medical movements. Management will be responsible for the movement of inmates out of Goulburn Gaol,” said Mr King.
