Union Celebrates Survival At 2025 Yabun Festival

PSA CPSU NSW is on hand for Aboriginal members.

The PSA CPSU NSW was among stallholders at the annual Yabun festival of First Nations culture on 26 January 2025.

“Walking around Yabun, we see pride in a culture that has survived for well over 200 years,” said Chair of the PSA CPSU NSW Aboriginal Council Darrell Brown (pictured bottom right). “It is important that we, as a union, aligns with such a pivotal day.

“We also need to reach out to potential members attending Yabun.”

The PSA CPSU NSW stall had membership information available.

Yabun is held on Australia Day, which is a contentious celebration for many Aboriginal people, as it marks the arrival of the First Fleet and the beginning of dispossession.

“Yabun is important as it marks what we called Survival Day,” said Deputy Chair of the union’s Aboriginal Council, Erica Smits (picture top right).

“It is good for us to have something on 26 January. I’d rather be at Yabun celebrating our culture.”

Ms Smits, who in the past has been involved in organising the annual event at Victoria Park in Sydney’s inner west, said it gives Aboriginal people a chance to celebrate, rather than commiserate over historic injustice.

“It’s a place I feel loved and cared for,” she said. “My community is a caring, thoughtful community.

“You also get to see some great up-and-coming music and dance acts.”

PSA CPSU NSW Aboriginal Liaison Officer Ricky Walford was on hand to answer questions about the union.

“It was a successful day, and it was good to see everyone having a good time on what can be a sombre day for many people,” said Mr Walford. “It’s good that our proud union supports a day that respects Aboriginal people.”
