Ombudsman vows to chase underpayers in the university sector

The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has vowed to give more stringent penalties to universities that underpay staff.

In an interview with The Australian, the FW, Anna Booth said almost all universities needed to “lift their game’’ and comply with workplace laws.

While Ms Booth’s comments related to underpayment at the University of Melbourne (pictured), the issue is widespread throughout all of the country, including in NSW. The CPSU NSW has uncovered widespread underpayment in the universities it covers.

From January 2025, universities will be subject to penalties of as much as $4.7 million for underpaying staff.
