Extra day off would bring NSW closer to Victoria.
Premier Chris Minns has floated the idea of a public holiday on Monday 27 April 2026 to give workers a day off, as Anzac Day this year falls on a Saturday.
This would mean a day off on Monday 26 April 2027, as Anzac Day will be on a Sunday that year.
The proposal highlights the deficit between NSW and Victoria, which gets two additional days off: Melbourne Cup Day and the Friday before the Australian Football League Grand Final, which is held in the Victorian capital.
The Australian Capital Territory has 13 public holidays, including days off for Canberra Day on 9 March and Reconciliation Day on 1 June.
