PSA demands government response to a statewide crisis

Union says domestic violence surge should not be left to community organisations to solve.

The Public Service Association (PSA) is demanding the state government do more to combat domestic violence in NSW.

The union launched a campaign to replicate throughout the state a government-run domestic violence service that operates out of western Sydney. The campaign was lunched on the same day the PSA held a domestic violence summit at its Sydney headquarters. The summit was attended by members in a variety of workplaces who deal with domestic violence.

The Western Sydney Nepean Blue Mountains Domestic Violence Service, which is located in Mount Druitt, coordinates services for people affected by violence. It works with government organisations such as Homes NSW, the police and the Department of Communities and Justice. It also deals with non-government organisations.

Mr Little said the service needs to be used as a template and replicated throughout NSW, so that anyone experiencing violence in the home has access to government-run support, “regardless of their postcode”.

The campaign was launched at a press conference behind State Parliament. It was attended by representatives of the Police Association, the Health Services Union and the Nurses and Midwives Federation.

Information on the campaign can be found at dvneedspublicservices.com.au
