Newcastle University decision may spread throughout entire sector.
The CPSU NSW has managed to secure a deal at the University of Newcastle, winning 17 per cent superannuation for casual staff.
In an arrangement dating back to 1993, permanent staff receive 17 per cent super. However, casuals received the national minimum, 12 per cent.
“We hope to see this replicated throughout all universities in Australia,” said General Secretary Stewart Little. “It shows the importance of a strong university presence on our campuses for professional staff.”
Newcastle is the first university in Australia to give casual staff 17 per cent supernnuation.
